NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS.

Gordon D. Fee once said, “Show me a church's songs and I'll show you their theology.”

What songs we sing matter. So we need to recheck the hymn's words before we sing. We need to test whether we sing hymns based on sound doctrine or not.

Today I picked up one hymn ' NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS'

Which is written and sung by Robert Lowry (1876)

1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth, To him, who loves us and has freed us from our sins his blood.

1 peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

1 John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

o   Refrain:
Oh! Precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;

Psalms 51:7 “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” God takes our sins and washes them white as snow.

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

1 peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

2.    For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

Hebrews 9:15-22 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.  For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood.  For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Psalms 51:7 “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” God takes our sins and washes them white as snow.

3.    Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Titus 3:5 He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

4.    This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Romans 4:1-8 What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, tour forefather according to the flesh?  For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”  Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.  And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,  just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:  “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;  blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not  count his sin.”

5.    Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Philippians3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

6.    Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Revelation 5:8-14 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
    and with your blood you purchased for God
    persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
    and they will reign[a] on the earth.”

 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.  In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
    to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
    and honor and glory and praise!”

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
    be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”

 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
